A relatively 'new' palace built in the 19th century using the romantic style popular at that time. It was constructed on the uninhabited remains of a 16th century monastery cloister and chapel, to the design of german architect. He took his main inspiration from Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria but also from buildings seen during a tour of Asia and Portugal itself. This resulted in the towers and battlements, bright coloured terraces and mythological based statuary we see today.
